c.3.8 million years ago Australopithecines, the first human-like creatures (hominids) to walk upright, appear.

c.2.5 million year ago Homo habilis (“handy man”) evolves in Africa. It uses simple tools. The start of the Palaeolithic or Old Stone Age.

c.1.9 million year ago Homo ergaster and Homo erectus (“upright man”) both evolve in Africa (they may have been closely related, or even identical, species). They use sharper tools and fire.

c.1.8 million years ago Homo erectus spread east into China and on into Southeast Asia.
