Akbar Akbar the Great (ruled 1556–1605) was Mughal Emperor in India. The empire had been founded in 1526 by his father, Babur, a descendant of the Mongol emperor Genghis Khan. The Mughal Empire stretched across almost the whole of modern India. Becoming emperor when he was only 13 years old, Akbar set up a strong system of government. In order to encourage peace among his subjects, his policies tolerated all religions. He was also a great patron of art and culture.
