Which foods are good for us?

Eating healthy foodsUseful substances in food are called nutrients. There are several kinds of nutrients. They are: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fibre, minerals and vitamins. Proteins are used to build and repair your muscles and body parts. Carbohydrates and fats provide you with energy, while fibre helps you to pass waste more easily out of your body. Vitamins and minerals are certain types of chemicals that are essential to keep you healthy and help you grow.

Proteins are found in foods such as meat, poultry and fish, greens, beans and milk. Fats are found in meat, oily fish and dairy products, as well as olives and avocados. Carbohydrates are found in foods such as bread, potatoes, cereals, pasta and mushrooms. Fibre is found in wholemeal bread, fruit and vegetables. Cellulose, which makes up the cell walls in plants, is an important fibre.
