He appealed to Lars Porsenna, the powerful Etruscan leader, for assistance. Lars Porsenna besieged Rome, but, to enter the city his army had to cross a narrow bridge over the River Tiber. According to legend, just Horatius Cocles and two other Roman soldiers stood on the bridge to defend their city against the invaders. 753 BC The founding of Rome by, according to legend, the brothers Romulus and Remus. The building of the city of Rome begins around this time.
