A to Z of insect families

Army ant

Ants have thin waists, long "elbowed" antennae and two strong jaws, called mandibles. More than 15,000 species of ants are known. Ants live in large colonies. These are made up of a queen, males (which have wings), workers (which do not) and, in some kinds, soldiers. Ants have varied diets that include seeds, fruit, other insects and honeydew.

Cicadas are the loudest of all insects, capable of producing a song louder than any rock concert heard at close range.
